OWENS’ TERRIFIC TREBLE

- By Martin Jobling

A JAMIE Owens hat-trick helped Marske record their first league win of 2019 in emphatic fashion against Lincoln United.

Owens opened the scoring on 12 minutes, sliding in from close range after Brad Plant’s dangerous ball across the six-yard box.

It was 2-0 on 21 minutes after Craig Gott’s shot hit the bar and bounced down onto the line, Owens’ rebound was saved and Curtis Round blasted home.

Owens got his second and Marske’s third on 57 minutes when he was teed up by Glen Butterworth.

Plant got on the scoresheet on 76 minutes, tapping in from close range.

Owens completed his second hat-trick of the season three minutes later with a low finish into the bottom corner to make it 50.

A feisty contest saw tenman AFC Mansfield come from behind twice to earn a 2-2 draw with relegation rivals Wisbech Town.

The Bulls were on the back foot early on after Pat Lindley earned a straight red card just ten minutes in.

And Michael Frew ensured Wisbech would take advantage as he nudged them ahead only several minutes later.

Joe Iaciofano poked home his 11th goal in a red shirt to bring the Bulls level before the break.

Substitute Alex Beck restored the Fenmen’s lead early in the second half, but the hosts refused to stick to the script and drew level again thanks to Jordan Annable with less than ten minutes to spare.

Belper Town scored both goals in this closely fought encounter in a game of very few chances with Frickley Athletic.

Peter Crouz gave Belper the lead on 17 minutes with a neat turn and shot just inside the post as the Nailers looked the stronger side at the start.

However Frickley increasingly came into the game and levelled the scores in the 45th minute when Jacob Hazel’s cross into the six yard area was turned into his own goal by Craig Nelthorpe.

It was end-to-end stuff in the second half but neither

side could break the deadlock although Belper were indebted to Danny Gordon and Alfred Thompson, who were in the right place to head efforts from Sam Liversidge and Todd Jordan off the line and preserve the result.

Elsewhere, in a dramatic turn of events Spalding

United ran riot in a 7-3 thumping of Pontefract Collieries.

Eight of the goals coming in a thrilling second half as Spalding who sit down in 18th in the table despite this victory put the promotion chasing Collieries, who are third now, to the sword.

Bradley Wells and Liam Marshall put the hosts in front at the break but in the second period the match went crazy as Spalding hit top gear in quite some style.

Leon Mettam made it three for the hosts before Wells bagged his second – Christopher Jackson pulling one back for the visitors.

But Romario Martin then bagged a double – while Wells also completed his hat-trick to make it a magnificent seven for the home side.

Spencer Clarke and Connor Smythe late on gave the visitors a crumb of consolation to cap an enthralling afternoon that shook up the East division.

It took until the second half for Cleethorpes Town to break down

Gresley FC and make sure of all three points in their home encounter.

Paul Walker opened the scoring on the resumption after a first half of huffing and puffing and then Joshua Batty and Brody Robertson secured an impressive victory for the hosts.

Meanwhile, Rory Coleman and Scott Ruthven were on the scoresheet for Stocksbridge Park Steels as they claimed a 20 win at Pickering Town.

The win pulls them away from the bottom of the table and to within one point and three positions of their conquered opponents Pickering who curently sit 15th in the standings.
