VINCE OFF AS DANIELS STRUGGLE IN DEFEAT

- By Gary Salisbury

STAMFORD’S unbeaten start to the season was brought to a halt by a rugged Sheffield.

The omens looked bad with 30 seconds gone. A mix-up allowed Karl Demidh a free shot on goal that Dan Haystead saved well, Mitchell Dunne’s follow-up was blocked by Sean Wright and Marc Newsham could only slice his effort wide.

Sheffield did take the lead soon after, James Gregory picking the ball up from a throw and his cross was steered into the top corner by the head of Newsham. Stamford looked shell shocked but managed to get things in order and a low drive from Rob Morgan was well saved by Jonathan Hedge.

Sheffield were then awarded a penalty when a prone James Blunden was deemed to have tripped Demidh, Dunne sent Haystead the wrong way with his spot kick.

Again Stamford came back and Blunden headed just over from a Harry Vince corner. Stamford did get on the score sheet when Cosmos Matwasa found some space to cross,

Tom Siddons chested the ball and unleashed an unstoppable overhead kick into the corner.

Sheffield were rattled and Morgan and Tendai Chitiza both came close with efforts. Siddons was a thorn in Sheffield’s side all game and from a burst into the box and shot which was parried Rory Coleman almost put the ball into his own net but was saved by the bar.

Stamford were reduced to ten men when Vince was shown a straight red for a challenge on Demidh, Sheffield making the result safe with Newsham’s late lob.
