THET’S AN AMAZING GESTURE
THETFORD TOWN have given up their end-of-season bash to donate more than £2,000 to the NHS while also purchasing visors for healthcare workers and carers.
The Step 5 Eastern Counties League club handed over the sizeable cheque to West Suffolk Hospital earlier this week after totting up their ‘fine’ fund that is used for a postseason trip.
They have also used their travel expenses from their final game against Ely City to order 250 visors that will be given to Thetford’s School Lane Doctors surgery and distributed to the community.
“Nigel (Armes, club chairman) mentioned how a couple of local clubs had made contributions to the NHS so I put it in the club WhatsApp group,” explained long-serving right-back Sam Bond.
“The lads jumped at the idea to help. When we added together the money we realised we had over £2,000.
“Nigel told us how a lousually cal company is producing protective medical visors, instead of their normal product. We used the expenses from the game against Ely (£300), alongside funding from the club, to order 250 masks.
“That kickstarted other ideas. We have a fund for stuff like players being late for training, wearing new boots, new haircuts, pictures in the paper...that sort of thing.
“We were going to use the money from that on a trip overseas but decided to donate it all to the NHS.
“The lads are really pleased to help. Our club is a big part of the community and it makes me proud that we are able to share some positive news in such difficult times.”
