TROPHY LOCK-IN THWARTS STONES PARTY...

- By David Richardson

WEALDSTONE have been forced to put their championship celebrations on hold – due to the National League South trophy being locked in a jewellers!

The Stones were planning to hold a title-winning party under strict Covid-19 guidelines for their supporters at Grosvenor Vale yesterday.

But they decided to cancel the event on Thursday after being told the previous night that the trophy wouldn’t be in attendance.

“Everything was in place,” Stones chairman Rory Fitzgerald told The NLP. “We spoke to the National League who told us the cup and medals were in a jewellers in London. The individual medals might not be ready but we said that was fine, we could get over that as such.

“Unfortunately, they then told us we couldn’t have the trophy as it was in the jewellers and everyone was furloughed. I can’t believe someone couldn’t get access just for us to collect it and then return it should it need be. We’ve had to postpone it, there’s no value in doing it without the cup.

“A fair bit of time and money had gone into planning it so it’s disappointing it’s not happening. We might lose a couple of players this summer; it would have been nice for everyone to have been together.”

Indeed, manager Dean Brennan has already started putting together his squad for their National League return. Most of this season’s side is staying put and Fitzgerald believes they will adapt well.

“I think it will suit us playing up a level,” he added. “Technically, our players are very good and we’ve added a bit more physicality to the squad.

“We’re confident we’ll give a good account of ourselves and remain in the league, which is the aim.”
