DRAGONS GRANTED A £100K BAILOUT WINDFALL
WREXHAM have received a £100,000 grant from the Welsh Government’s Spectator Sports Survival Fund to help offset some of the losses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Due to their affiliation with the Football Association of Wales, the Dragons were the only club from the English National League System excluded from the £11 million Sports Winter Survival Package.
But while their National League rivals have only been offered finance packages by way of loans from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) – many of which have since been refused – the Dragons have been handed some welcome assistance.
Wrexham’s losses are currently being met by their new owners, Hollywood actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, who took over at the Racecourse Ground club in February.
The Dragons say the grant helps to ensure this commitment “does not compromise the owners’ proactive plans” to make a positive difference in the wider community.
A club spokesman said: “Wrexham AFC were pleased to receive £100,000 from the Spectator Sports Survival Fund.
“The club has suffered losses well in excess of this amount as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which are currently being met by the club’s owners, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.
“The owners have committed to ensure the club survives the financial implications of the pandemic.
“This grant helps to ensure this commitment does not compromise the owners’ proactive plans to make a positive difference in the wider Wrexham community.
“Wrexham AFC would like to thank Lesley Griffiths MS and Sarah Atherton MP, who both wrote letters in support of us receiving assistance.”
