SUPER JOE CONTINUES AS YEOVIL GOLDEN BOY

- By Sheridan Robins

JOE QUIGLEY’S fourth goal in three matches helped Yeovil Town secure a second straight win in front of the TV cameras at Huish Park.

The 24-year-old is now joint top scorer in the National League and has scored all the Glovers’ goals this season.

In truth, though, it was more comfortable than the score line suggests, with Luke Wilkinson and Tom Knowles both going close to extending the Glovers’ lead.

But the sole breakthrough came on 14 minutes when Knowles was brought down in the box by Niall Maher and Quigley – the former Bournemouth striker who scored a brace in the win at Aldershot on Bank Holiday Monday – fired home the resulting spot-kick.

That gave the Glovers renewed vigour, and they should have added to the tally when Dale Gorman’s free kick almost found the back of the net, but instead trickled wide.

Yeovil manager Darren Sarll said: “They made me a little bit nervy at the end there, but I thought we dealt with most things well.

“Second half we had to defend a little bit deeper but even then, the shape was very good, very resolute with good characters.

“I thought our full-backs were both fantastic and [Sonny Blu] Lo Everton is just a brilliant footballer with a brilliant mind, and he makes very difficult things look very easy.”

Halifax huffed and puffed in the second half and former Glover Matt Warburton almost came back to haunt his former club with a fizzing freekick, that was well saved by Smith down to his right. The rebound was then fired wide by Luke Summerfield.

Late on, Charlie Wakefield almost opened his account for Yeovil after combining well with Adi Yussuf, but his shot went wide.

Yeovil soaked up pressure well and striker Quigley was praised by his manager for his work for the team at the back, as well as going forward.

Sarll added: “I thought Joe [Quigley] was excellent defensively as well and last year we never had a regular back four and it was always who is available and now you are seeing the benefits of having a settled side. I am going to enjoy this win ahead of next weekend’s game.”

Halifax boss Pete Wild was given his marching orders and sent off by referee Thomas Parsons after his interaction with officials, meaning he will serve a touchline ban over the next few matches.

The Shaymen have now won two, lost two in their opening four matches of the season, in what has been a mixed start to the campaign.

Victory takes Yeovil into the top ten with a game in hand over several of their rivals.
