HOT WOOD STILL ENJOY THEIR HOME COMFORTS

- By Brett Lewis

BOREHAM Wood recovered from an early scare to maintain their unbeaten home record with victory over King’s Lynn Town.

Malachi Linton stunned Meadow Park by giving the visitors a shock 12th-minute lead lead but two goals from Josh Rees and another from Tyrone Marsh sealed the three points for the Wood.

Victory kept Wood finely poised in fifth – two points behind leaders Stockport County – and left manager Luke Garrard full pof praise for his charges.

“The players are a credit to themselves and the club,” Garrard said. “It’s been a great week with seven points out of nine. However, we were a bit sloppy today and weren’t at our best.”

Wood, however, started slowly and despite enjoying plenty of possession, it was the visitors who took the lead.

Michael Clunan’s initial shot was blocked and Aaron Jones’ strike was tucked in by Linton.

At this stage King’s Lynn were getting a lot of joy down the left side with Linton and Luis Fernandez a constant menace. Linton went close again on 29 minutes when forcing a good save from Taye Ashby-Hammond in the Boreham Wood goal.

Wood, however, were never out of it with Marsh firing an effort just over a minute later, while defender Will Evans failed to connect with his head when well placed.

Finally, on 41 minutes, the home side got their reward when Rees headed in a pinpoint cross from James Comley.

The second half started at a faster pace than the first period and within four minutes of the restart, Wood took the lead. Comley won the ball brilliantly in midfield with the ball richoching to Danilo Orsi. His shot was well saved by Paul Jones in the Linnets goal before Rees followed in for his second of the afternoon.

Then, just after the hour, Wood increased their lead. Frankie Raymond’s free-kick was cleared into the path of Marsh who finished well past Jones.

By now Wood were completely dominant and looked likely to add to there lead.

Substitute Scott Boden nearly added a fourth on 88 minutes following a free-flowing Wood move, but the former Chesterfield frontman was denied by an excellent save from Jones.

Adrian Clifton’s shot was also saved by Jones a minute later.

The Linnets had an opportunity to halve Wood’s lead in injury-time but Ashby-Hammond made an excellent save from Linton.

For Wood, it was the perfect warm-up for next Sunday’s FA Cup fourth round tie at AFC Bournemouth, but Tommy Widdrington’s Linnets are surely staring down the barrel in 22nd place, now 14 points from safety.
