WEBB: I AM SO PROUD OF TEAM

- By David Richardson

CHESTERFIELD first-team coach Danny Webb heaped praise on how the Spireites’ players have handled a week that saw manager James Rowe suspended pending “an investigation into allegations of misconduct”.

The club made the announcement on Monday and will not comment any further. No details about what the allegations are, or how long the investigation could take, have been released.

The 39-year-old’s social media accounts have since disappeared following the announcement.

Rowe, inset right, has led the Spireites from National League relegation strugglers to title contenders after being appointed in November 2020.

Investigation

Earlier this month, the club enjoyed a memorable day at Chelsea in the FA Cup third round.

But their season was thrown into disarray this week with stunned coach Webb placed in charge for yesterday’s match at

Eastleigh, which was won 1-0 by a late Curtis Weston strike.

Following the win in Hampshire, Webb – who was on the staff at Leyton Orient when they won promotion from the National League in 2019 – explained how proud he is of the squad.

Webb said: “I’ve got a really good relationship with the players and today I was proud of them, not for me or the club, but for them because people underestimate how difficult it is not to know what’s going on from day to day. “For me it was just about letting the players crack on, giving them a little bit of guidance here and there, giving the responsibility on their shoulder.

Characters

“I think they’ve been brilliant in training and all season.

“It’s probably the best set of lads I’ve worked with, they’re good lads, characters, different but hard-working. They want to play for this club, win games and give those supporters something to sing about.

“Everyone deserves a breather tonight, a few glasses of wine, everyone’s gone through the mill a little bit.

“There’s only so much I can say because I’m none the wiser myself but hopefully it all gets resolved sooner than later.

“It’s the perfect result at the end of any week. It’s been a different week but luckily we’ve sent those supporters back to Derbyshire with a smile on their face.”

Chesterfield take on promotion rivals Dagenham & Redbridge and Stockport County in their next two games at a crucial moment in the season.
