RACE IS ON TO REPLACE ROWE

- By Neil Harvey

CHESTERFIELD have parted company with manager James Rowe amid allegations of misconduct – but one potential target to replace him, FC Halifax boss Pete Wild, last night ruled himself out.

Rowe, 39, was suspended by the club last month and now the parties have come to an agreement to split.

The former Gloucester City boss leaves the club in second place in the National League, having also taken the club to the FA Cup third round where they lost to Premier League Chelsea.

Danny Webb has been in interim charge while Rowe has been under suspension. Details of the allegations haven’t been released by the club, while Derbyshire Police have refused to confirm or deny they are investigating.

In a statement on Friday night, the Spireites said: “Chesterfield Football Club and James Rowe have today come to an agreement that his position as manager will terminate with immediate effect by mutual consent.

Hopes

“The club would like to thank James for his achievements during his tenure and wishes him well for the future.”

Rowe took over at Chesterfield last season with the club struggling in the lower reaches of the table before a remarkable turnaround saw a play-off finish, where they were beaten by

Notts County.

This season’s form has brought high hopes of ending their Non-League stay.

Webb has now won his two games at the helm.

Former boss Paul Cook is high on some of the fans’ wish-list, with the 54-yearold, who is out of work having left Ipswich Town in December, having reportedly had contact from the club.

Admirers

FC Halifax boss Pete Wild, inset, also has admirers at Chesterfield for the job he is doing at their promotion rivals.

But, in an interview with the Halifax Courier last night, he distanced himself and said he’s going nowhere.

He told the paper: “It would be disrespectful to go to a rival club in our league, disrespectful to the owner, to the trust he put in me, disrespectful to the fans who get behind us every week, and disrespectful to the players and staff who give me so much every week.”

Bromley boss Andy Woodman is another who could be in the mix.

The Ravens boss was recently subject to an official approach from League One Gillingham.

Despite talks, the former Arsenal goalkeeper coach decided to stay at Hayes Lane.

The club tweeted: “The club can confirm that Andy Woodman remains our manager.” Despite an official approach from Gillingham, Andy has decided to remain at Hayes Lane and concentrate on the job at hand as we continue to challenge for promotion to the Football League.”
