FURIOUS King’s Lynn Town manager Tommy Widdrington pulled no punches after seeing his side pushed closer to National League relegation by Maidenhead at The Walks.

Any realistic hopes Lynn had of survival were blown away in the second half after a shambolic defensive display in front of their home faithful, while ruthless Maidenhead made them pay.

Dan Sparkes cancelled out Gold Omotayo’s opener going into the interval before a quickfire double from Josh Kelly put the Magpies in control after the restart.

Widdrington raged: “There wasn’t too many positives to take out of the game other than our goal.

“I’m lost for words really and that’s not really like me. I can take losing games, but I was embarrassed towards the end of that game.

“What we came up against today were big, strong men who are playing at the level they are playing at for a reason.

“The moment we as a football club realise what we are, who we are and what we need to do then we might have a chance.

“That’s twice now where we’ve had great performances in midweek and then followed it up with a no-show at home and I can’t take that.”

There were chances at both ends before Omotayo, who has found goals hard to come by since his summer arrival in Norfolk, performed a neat sidestep to his right teed up a shot from 20 yards which ended in the bottom left corner.

But then came the body blow, when Lynn were again caught wanting at the back and Kelly found Sparkes, who travelled 20 yards with the ball before firing past Jones to level matters.

Lynn struggled to get any grip on the game but 10 minutes before the break were denied a goal when Jak Hickman’s deep cross from the right was brilliantly met by Omotayo, but his header to the far corner was cleared off the line by Manny Parry.

Sparkes should have put the visitors ahead two minutes into the second half after some calamitous home defending but Jones parried the effort away for a corner.

Kelly put that right on 54 minutes when he out-muscled Barrows inside the area and fired high into the net, leaving Jones no chance. Two minutes later Kelly added another – Brett McGavin opted to head clear when he should have hoofed it clear.

Maidenhead accepted the gift and Kelly did the rest, driving into the area, brushing off three challenges and again leaving Jones with no chance.

Upward tapped in from close range on 74 minutes with Lynn’s defence nowhere to be seen again as the visitors toyed with their hosts for the majority of the second half.
