BOSS FEENEY SETS OUT TO EARN HIS WINGS

- By Jon Couch

WARREN Feeney believes going back to basics will help Welling United in their quest for survival in National League South.

The 40-year-old ex-Northern Ireland international was named the new Wings’ boss this week, replacing former England manager Peter Taylor, ousted after a run of just one win from 11 matches.

landed the job having left his previous role in charge of Bulgarian side Pirin Blagoevgrad in December.

The 46-cap striker has also previously taken the dugout at Lingfield, Ards and Northern Ireland Under-21s on a short-term basis last March.

But despite never having experienced football this level, Feeney believes he has the experience and knowhow to help Welling in their battle for survival at Step 2.

“I had a good chat with the chairman [Mark Goldberg] and I liked what he was saying. I liked his ideas for the club so it was done quite quickly,” Feeney said.

“I’m not scared of a chalFeeney lenge and I love football. People will say ‘you don’t know the league’ but I’ve been a professional footballer for over 18 years and a manager of 190odd games so I know football.

“People go on about philosophies and levels but philosophies is winning football matches and at this moment in time Welling United need to win football matches. There’s no right, there’s no wrong.

“Everyone wants to play the pretty way but at the end of the day it’s a results business and we need results. That’s the job I’ve been brought in to do and that’s what I’ll stick by.

“There’s going to be ups and downs, we just have to give the players belief and confidence again to try and get some wins on the board.”
