DEFENCE RULES IN A DRAB SHUTOUT

- By Machel Hewitt STAR MAN: Billy Bingham (Bromley) ATT: 3,123 ENTERTAINMENT: REFEREE: Adrian Quelch

TWO of the National league promotion contenders played out a rather dour goal-less draw at Hayes Lane.

A result that had both managers reflecting on what might have been in a very hard-fought encountering.

“It’s fine margins,” said Ravens manager Andy Woodman. “There wasn’t a lot at either end but I thought we showed the resilience that I know we’ve got.

“We went about our business well today and I don’t think you could really see the difference between the two teams truth be told.”

On a day dominated by the windy conditions neither side was really able to fashion a golden opportunity that could have made the difference.

In truth, it took a long time for the game to burst into life as the first half saw clear-cut chances at a premium.

Michael Cheek rued an early missed opportunity when Luke Coulson’s cross found its way through to the unmarked frontman. However, perhaps surprised at how much space he was in, he could only shin the ball off the pitch.

The early scare aside Wrexham took control of possession and should have done better with a series of corners and crosses into the box.

Aaron Hayden, Max Cleworth and Ollie Palmer headed wide when hitting the target appeared easier.

With Bromley having to soak up a lot of pressure they nearly took the lead against the run of play but Jude Arthurs could only flick Corey Whitely’s cross the wrong side of the post.

The second half saw the home side up the ante and be the more dominant.

Coulson volleyed a chance at Rob Lainton and the Wrexham custodian bravely saved the follow up shot from Ali Al-Hamadi. Unfortunately, Lainton broke his wrist in the process and had to be stretched off and replaced by Christian Dibble.

Bromley continued to press and saw Cheek’s scuffed header cleared off the line. At the other end James Jones shot over from the edge of the area when well placed.

As the clock counted down, Billy Bingham shot wide from 25 yards and Whitely just failed to connect with Coulson’s cross in injury time.

Wrexham manger Phil Parkinson felt the point was a well earnt one.

“It was a slow kind of game and we couldn’t get our intensity of our play to work the way we wanted,” Parkinson said. “We know how dangerous are and I thought we handled them well.

“We just couldn’t find the moment of quality needed to win the game. But at the end of the day if you cant get all three points make sure you leave with one and we did that today.”
