BURY BOYS ON THE BRINK OF HISTORY

- By Matt Badcock

BURY AFC stand on the precipice of their first ever league title – and boss Andy Welsh wants everyone to savour the moment if they do get over the line today.

The fan-owned club – born from the demise of Bury

FC – need a win from this afternoon’s clash with St Helens Town to clinch the North West Counties Division One North title.

And with a large crowd expected, Welsh knows it could be a historic day in the club’s early history.

“It’s our last home game of the first ever league campaign and what a fantastic position to be in going into that game,” Welsh told The NLP.

“This is what football’s all about. I’ve been there as a player going into the last few games of the season needing wins to win the league or get in the play-offs – you always want something to play for.

“Everything the town of Bury, and the Bury fans, have been through, this is certainly a moment to savour and really get behind the team.”

Life in the National League System hasn’t been straightforward with their first campaign cut short due to Covid.

But Welsh says those early games gave everyone at the Step 6 club a glimpse of what could come.

“Even though it was a short seven games, we were top of the league,” he said. “It gave us a little taste of what was to come and the support for the club.

“We had a great pre-season and it’s just gone from strength to strength. We’ve got an unbelievable group of players to match the unbelievable group of people behind the scenes at the club that have built it.

“But, like I’ve said throughout the season, we’re never going to be judged when things are going well. It’s when they don’t go so well.

“That’s a big part of Bury AFC and – whether it’s weeks, months, or years – we’re always going to be judged by how we react in the darker times.

“So we must enjoy this now as we continue to build as a football club.”
