TOMMY’S LYNN ARE ON A ROLL

- By Greg Plummer STAR MAN: Josh Barrett (King’s Lynn) 921 Matthew Dicicco

KING’S Lynn Town condemned Halifax to back-to-back league defeats as they boosted their National League survival hopes with a huge win at The Walks.

Second-half goals from Josh Barrett and ex-Town striker Gold Omotayo saw the Linnets overtake Weymouth in the league standings and close the gap on Aldershot in 20th spot to seven points.

“We just wanted the lads to give every ounce that they’ve got and they’ve done that,” said delighted Lynn boss Tommy Widdrington.

“When so many lads have good days, which they did, and one or two of theirs didn’t have such good days we made it swing in our favour.

“We knew it was going to be tough second half as we were winning, but this will only be a great win if we go and follow up.

“When I came in the building I said that we don’t have to get above ten teams, we just have to get above two and now we’re ahead of one of those.

“What I don’t want to do now is drop down back in there so we can only do that if we stay on the front foot and remain positive but the lads deserve great credit for today.”

An even first half saw Barrett squander a great chance by volleying over from ten yards out, before Michael Clunan sent a free-kick just wide.

Town needed a break and got one when Gerry McDonagh was fouled by onrushing keeper Paul Jones just inside the box to be awarded a penalty, but Matty Warburton sliced his spotkick wide of the target.

Lynn, playing with pride and passion, were dominant after the interval.

Barrett saw a brilliant shot from 25 yards crash off the crossbar a few minutes after half-time. But he was left with an easy finish after the visitors were slow to react to Omotayo’s flick on, allowing Clunan to pass sideways to Barrett for a tap-in.

Omotayo sealed it in added time with a close range finish as high-flying Halifax went down with a whimper – but that was purely down to Lynn’s will to win.

Beaten Town boss Pete Wild said his players’ attitude and effort wasn’t good enough.

“The first goal was offside and the second one’s a foul, but in terms of application, attitude and effort, they had far better spells of it for more sustained periods, that’s why they won the football match,” he said.

“I think some of them felt like they were going to come here and it was just going to happen for them, and it hasn’t happened for them.

“I honestly believe that we have to play better than that.

“I will always try and defend my players if they give us effort but to be outworked by a team, I find it very hard to defend that.”
