SUPER SUB GLOVER IS A SCOURGE OF GLOVERS

ALDERSHOT Town gave their survival hopes a huge boost with an impressive win at Yeovil, which leaves them eight points clear of the National League relegation zone.

Two goals in five second half minutes from Giles Phillips and substitute Ryan Glover – against the Glovers – were enough to seal Mark Molesley’s men a second win in a row.

“We got it right today,” Molesley said. “The balance of the side was right – the lads deserve a lot of credit.”

Aldershot stopped the rot of just one point from a possible 27 with victory over Boreham Wood last Saturday and they started in similar vein here.

Tommy Willard and Christian Oxlade Chamberlain found some joy on the flanks but without troubling Grant Smith in the Yeovil goal.

Caretaker boss Charlie Lee was taking charge of his first Yeovil home game but it took 25 minutes for his side to really get going. Tom Knowles burst forward at pace on the half hour mark. His neat onetwo meant he was able to get his shot away inside the box only for it to ricochet off the outside of the post.

Knowles then almost became provider when his low ball couldn’t quite find the boots of Reuben Reid who would have been perfectly placed to tap the ball home.

Sonny Blu Lo-Everton was a bright spark on the left side of Yeovil’s midfield with his layoffs to the forwards causing problems in the box. He found Knowles in the six-yard box just before half time, but he couldn’t get his shot on target.

The second half saw the hosts take control with a wave of attacks resulting in Josh Neufville, Knowles and Alex Bradley all going close.

But on 65 minutes, Luke Wilkinson needlessly fouled Mikael Njdoli on the right, Lewis Kinsella floated over the free-kick and Phillips was on hander to power a free header past Smith.

It was against the run of play but just five minutes later the Shots doubled their advantage. Substitute Glover slid the ball into the back of the net from close range after a ball over the top from Oxlade-Chamberlain caught the home side’s defence off guard.

An injury to a visiting fan meant 12 minutes were added on for stoppages, in which time Glover was sent off for a second yellow card.

Lee said: “I thought we started the second half really well, and looked like the team who would score, but when you concede a goal from a set-piece, you are chasing the game.

“It was two poor goals in a game where we were comfortable, and we are not going to hide away from that – that is too many bad goals in the past few games. For the first time in a few games, we looked like we were really lacking that killer instinct.”
