GAME ON – THANKS TO TV’S GRANT
CRISIS club Staines Town have struck an agreement to complete their Isthmian League season – all thanks to their celebrity fan.
TV astrologer and personality Russell Grant stepped in to rescue his beloved Swans amidst a bitter row with their Wheatsheaf Park landlords Dowling LLP which threatened to bring their season to a premature end.
Neighbours Bedfont Sports lent a hand by agreeing to host the first two of their three remaining home games this week in order to help the relegated Middlesex club fulfil their Isthmian South Central schedule.
But, due to a clash with tenants Southall, Sports couldn’t stage the final game so Grant used his contacts wisely to persuade National League club Wealdstone to provide the venue for the visit of Northwood on Saturday.
Superfan Grant, 71 – a club patron of both Staines and Wealdstone – organised the oneoff groundshare with Stones president Paul Rumens, at least giving interim manager Chico
some closure following a rather forgettable Step 4 campaign.
Grant tweeted: “We at Staines Town are hugely grateful to Wealdstone FC. Paul, what you and Stones fans are doing will never be forgotten. As Patron of both clubs it makes me so proud. Thank you.”
A club statement read: “Club officials have been touched at the generosity of a number of other clubs who have offered help.
“Needless to say, Staines Town officials are extremely grateful to both Bedfont Sports FC and Wealdstone FC, and all the staff at these two clubs, for their wonderful gestures, which further demonstrates the camaraderie that exists within Non-League football.”
