GREG’S HEAD FOCUSED ON HEED ALONE

- By Mark Carruthers

GATESHEAD captain Greg Olley has warned his side they must only focus on themselves as they look to secure the National League North title.

North-east rivals Darlington looked set to inflict a big blow to those title hopes on Bank Holiday Monday as Alun Armstrong’s men took a twogoal lead into half-time at the International Stadium.

But a resurgent Heed roared back into the game and earned a crucial 4-2 win thanks to a brace from top goalscorer Macaulay Langstaff and a goal apiece from Connor Malley and Olley.

The importance of the result was further enhanced by Brackley Town’s 1-0 home defeat against Boston United, which meant Mike Williamson’s side held a four-point lead at the top of the table with just four games to play ahead of yesterday’s round of fixtures.

But rather than focus on the results of their main title rivals, Olley just wants his side to producing the performances that has taken them to within sight of a return to the top tier.

“We do our job first, that’s what matters,” he told The NLP. “I didn’t hear a thing on the pitch when news from elsewhere was going around.

“I was focused entirely on our game and what we could do to affect it. It’s about us doing the right things.

“Maybe the defeat against Brackley was the best thing that happened because it made us switch on again, refocus and made us realise what we had to do over the coming weeks.

“We’ve shown that we can do it, we just need to keep going.”

Striker Langstaff has been a key part of Gateshead’s progress this season, taking his tally for the season to 30 with his brace against Darlington.

Now he is determined to continue finding the net in the remaining games to help his side over the line.

“I am pleased to get that mark because that’s the mark I set myself after getting to 20,” he added. “As long as I am scoring goals I am helping the team.”
