YELLOWS MELLOW OVER FINAL CHANCES

- By Mark Carruthers

WARRINGTON Town chairman Toby Macormac is hoping his club can make a unique piece of Northern Premier League history tomorrow. The Yellows will travel to Scarborough Athletic as the league holds its first play-off final since 2019 as the Covid-19 pandemic brought an early end to the last two seasons. Coincidentally, Warrington also competed in that final as they claimed a hard-earned win at South Shields before succumbing to King’s Lynn Town in a ‘Super Play-off Final’ days later. Kevin Phillips’ Mariners were beaten once again earlier this weekend as Warrington came through a penalty shoot-out in Tuesday night’s semi-final in the northeast.

Macormac is now fully focused on tomorrow afternoon’s trip to the Flamingo Land Stadium – and is hopeful his clubs can bring a successful end to a challenging season on and off the pitch.

“It’s a huge achievement for us this season,” he told The NLP. “Post-pandemic, we promised our supporters an upper-mid table finish and maybe try and get into the play-offs.

“It’s been tough, changing manager through the season is always a tough thing. “There can be a transitional phase, but we have come through that, despite being inconsistent at times.

“But to go to South Shields, do what we have done, on an occasion like this, it’s just massive for our football club.

“It will be a strange thing because I think we could be the only Northern Premier League club to have won back-toback play-off finals. So there’s a little bit of history there for us.” Scarborough will go into the game as favourites to secure a place in next season’s National League North.

The Seadogs have claimed 2-0 wins in both meetings between the two sides this season – but that will mean little to Warrington, who were beaten home and away by South Shields prior to their win at the 1st Cloud Arena earlier this week. Macormac believes the Yellows will need to match the levels shown against the Mariners on Tuesday if they are to claim a perfectly-timed first win over Scarborough this season.
