WILKO’S WONDER RESCUES GLOVERS

- By Sheridan Robins

YEOVIL and Boreham Wood played out an entertaining end-of-season affair with the Glovers recovering from 2-0 down at Huish Park to dent the visitors’ slim play-off hopes.

The Wood started strongly knowing they need a near perfect end to the season to secure a play-off place and took advantage of some generous defending from the hosts, who’d switched to a back three.

Jacob Mendy Mendy’s excellent cross found Tyrone Marsh who made no mistake with his finish past Grant Smith on 11 minutes.

The home side had a great chance to equalise from the spot after Tom Knowles was fouled in the box but Dale Gorman saw his penalty well saved by Wood’s in-form keeper Nathan Ashmore.

Frustration was creeping in for the Glovers and Gorman was out muscled off the ball by Dennon Lewis who only had Luke Wilkinson and Smith to beat to fire the Wood into a commanding position just before

the half hour mark.

The visitors dominated from then on and went close from a corner as Lewis tried his luck, only to find Smith saving well to his right.

Yeovil’s best chance came through Morgan Williams, but he failed to connect with the ball and took Ashmore with him, in a half to forget for Charlie Lee’s side.

However, it was a different story in the second half with Yeovil showing renewed vigour. Knowles burst forward from the kick off and almost got the Glovers off to the perfect start but shot just wide. It was on 58 minutes that the Glovers halved the deficit after a Knowles long throw caused chaos in the box with Morgan Williams getting the final touch.

It sparked Yeovil into life. Seven minutes later an inch perfect free-kick from Wilkinson secured a point for the home side.

There was only one team in it thereafter, with Knowles, Lawson D’Ath and Wilkinson all going close to get the winner.

Yeovil interim manager Charlie Lee said: “The character was great, and I thought we were exceptional and to be honest, we just wanted 10 more minutes and I think we would have won the game.

“When you let in sloppy goals, you have to then come back and that has been us all season. I thought the first 20 minutes was the best we have played, and we did so well to win the penalty. From a bad position, they did so well to come back and they were exceptional in the second half.

“I felt comfortable with our play and I think we should have scored more than two today. We have worked so hard on set pieces and I have been critical of them, and they were much better today.”
