PILGRIMS – AND CELT

- By Joshua Makin

BOSTON United booked their place in the National League North play-off places – but both teams were left smiling after Farsley Celtic were saved from relegation following Guiseley’s defeat at Alfreton.

Paul Cox’s men ended the season in fine form after notching up two wins against Bradford Park Avenue and Brackley Town prior to their visit to the Citadel.

Goals from Jake D Wright and Danny Elliot in either half sealed the three points which took Boston into seventh ahead of Kettersult ing Town and the Pilgrims will now face Kidderminster Harriers.

It was also a celebratory day for Farsley, who were saved from relegation in dramatic fashion after Alfreton came from behind to beat Guiseley with two late goals.

It sparked wild scenes at the Citadel with both sets of supporters flooding out on the pitch at the final whistle.

Farsley manager Russ Wilcox said: “Unbelievable, unbelievable day and my emotions have been like a rollercoaster.

“Obviously, it’s not about the re

today but it’s all about the end goal and that was to keep this club in the division and over 19 games we have achieved that.

“It has been a tall order and with the team not winning ber tween November and February and I’m glad I took the challenge on even though I wasn’t quite sure at the time but what a great set of lads in that dressing room.”

“I cannot speaak highly enough of them. From day one, you could see that hunger to get survival for the football club and I’m delighted for everybody involved such as the chairman and many others.”

The visitors were on the front

foot from kick-off and almost took the lead after two minutes when Boston’s top scorer with 28 goals this season, Danny Elliot, headed just wide of the post.

The visitors continued to threaten and after 37 minutes they had the lead after Jake D Wright raced into the box and latched onto a Paul Green cross which he fired past David Robson to put Boston in the driving seat.

Farsley came out stronger in the second half and if it was not for a Shane Byrne block, Frank Mulhern would have levelled three minutes after the break.

The Celt Army continued to pile the pressure on and Mulhern almost found the net with a thunderous free-kick that flew wide.

With seven minutes to go, Boston sealed the points through Danny Elliot after a Scott Duxbury cross found the striker who converted into the roof of the net to put the result beyond any doubt.
