SATISFIED WILLO WILL BE TAKING NO CHANCES

GATESHEAD manager Mike Williamson said his side still has a mountain to climb to avoid the drop, despite recording their third win on the road at Solihull Moors.

Dan Ward put the Tynesiders in front just before the break with substitute Will Harris netting just his second of the season in the closing minutes to seal the three points.

And while the result leaves Gateshead with just one defeat in eight, Williamson insisted there was still work to be done.

“It was an incredible shift by the boys, another three points, but a real tough one. The endeavour, the spirit was different class,” the former Newcastle United defender said.

“But we have got a mountain to climb,” he added.

“We still need to reflect, see how we could improve and turn that into the next game – it’s as simple as that.”

Gateshead could have been out of sight before the break and nearly went ahead on nine minutes when Moors keeper Ryan Boot saved well to deny Ward after Adam Campbell won the ball high for the visitors.

Ryan Barnett went close for Moors five minutes later but could only shoot straight at Filip Marschall when the ball dropped to him on the edge of the box.

Ward then missed a second for the visitors midway through the half – played in by Kamil Conteh, he cut inside but fluffed his lines and slashed the ball over the bar from 12 yards out.

But just before the break Ward got his goal, tapping into an empty net after Boot had produced an impressive reflex save to keep out Conteh’s deflected cross.

The Gateshead man was not so lucky five minutes later when he was denied a second by a sliding Callum Howe block as he attempted to slot home from the edge of the six-yard box.

Campbell then wasted yet another chance for the Tynesiders before the break, his scuffed shot rolling out for a goal kick after he was played clean through on goal.

After the restart Solihull improved but never really looked like drawing level, Andrew Dallas going closest on 71 minutes when his low drive was kept out by Marschall.

And added time, the game was settled when the ball was played to Harris on the break to slot into the bottom corner past Boot.

The result leaves Moors with just one win in seven league games, with manager Neal Ardley questioning his players.

“First half was terrible,” he said with his under-performing side down to 14th in the table. “They worked twice as hard as we did with the ball and without the ball.

“We let them do what they wanted with the ball and we played into their hands. It looked like we hadn’t done any work on the game.”
