TAGS HAVE MORE LEFT TO ACHIEVE

- By Hugo Varley

HIS side may have already galloped to another promotion, but Hashtag United boss Jay Devereux was just happy to make even more memories in the club’s rapid rise!

The Tags secured the Isthmian North title last weekend in emphatic fashion, crushing 6-0 win over Great Wakering Rovers.

Hashtag had been locked in a tantalising battle at the summit with AFC Sudbury for the entirety of the campaign but an extraordinary run of 25 wins in 26 games saw the YouTube sensations finally race clear.

Hashtag’s remarkable run of 21 straight victories between mid-November and March saw them obliterate their previous record of 11 wins on the bounce and created national headlines along the way

For Devereux, the attention was just reward for his hard working side but he admits it also brought some unwanted added pressure.

“It was when we made it 20 wins in a row that the mainstream press really started to take notice, which was really great to be a part of,” he added.

“Up until 20 there wasn’t really any mention of it in the changing room but with all the attention getting past that milestone made, I think it maybe began to add a degree of expectation.

“It was pretty classic that just as we started to develop lots of coverage for the run, it ended!

“What an amazing sequence of results it was to be a part of though, we created memories that will last forever.”

With hundreds of thousands of subscribers on YouTube following them throughout the campaign, Hashtag United represent a truly modern footballing experiment.

So far, the results have been impressive. As football fans increasingly feel priced out of attending top flight games, the club, who were founded by internet personality Spencer Owen in 2017, have experienced an influx of followers.

Devereux is excited by what’s to come.

“It’s just such an amazing thing to be a part of and we feel like we are breaking new ground in the game – let’s see how far it takes us,” he added.
