The Non-League Football Paper

It’s time to vote your cup kings

-

THERE’S nothing like a good old Cup run to get the juices flowing, is there?

For everyone, from chairman down to the management, players and supporters, there’s simply nothing like enjoying a moment in the spotlight.

So, to honour those clubs who have made a big impact in the knockout competitions, we are throwing more glory their way in the shape of the National Game Awards Cup Run of the Year award, sponsored by The Football Association.

This prize always takes plenty of consideration and this year is no different with Non-League clubs once again hogging the headlines with some big giant-killing acts.

Our job now is to crown the ultimate cup kings, but we need your help as we prepare for the National Game Awards ceremony – sponsored by Isuzu – to be held at Plough Lane Stadium, on Tuesday May 23.

Not for the first time, Boreham Wood enjoyed FA Cup success after another sterling campaign which saw them knock out Joey Barton’s Bristol Rovers on the road.

Last year, Luke Garrard’s men progressed all the way to the fifth round where their run was ended by Everton at Goodison Park.

And Wood made it three successive third round berths this time round they were eventually edged out by Accrington Stanley after a replay.

An impressive away win at Coventry City saw Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham go one round further, only for a cruel last-minute equaliser and replay defeat to Championship big guns Sheffield United to end their run.

No-one played more cup games – and produced more cup shocks – however, than Bracknell Town.

The Southern League Premier South high-fliers came through three rounds to reach the first round of the FA Cup where they were paired with Ipswich Town.

It didn’t stop there for the Robins, who saw off higher-ranked opposition in Tonbridge Angels, Eastbourne Borough and Bath City to progress to the fifth round of the FA Trophy where their run was ended by Altrincham.

And to top it off, the Robins also reached the final of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup after toppling the likes of Wycombe Wanderers and MK Dons.

If it’s consistency that gets your vote, how about a mention for Newport Pagnell Town? The FA Vase holders will take on Ascot United in their second successive Wembley trip after another mesmeric run which saw them come through three penalty shoot-outs. That’s cup kings for you!

There’s none better placed than yourselves, the fans, to select the winner of this award. So what are you waiting for? Get in touch and crown your cup kings!
