HIS MAGIC FOR TITLE KNEES-UP

-

he brushed aside the challenge of David Agbontohoma near the touchline before driving into the box and leaving Nathan Ashmore well beaten with a spectacular cross shot that ripped into the far corner.

His second and ultimately the decisive goal in Wrexham’s toe-to-toe dual with second placed Notts County came 20 minutes later.

Again, there seemed little reason for Boreham Wood alarm when Mullin won the ball. This time he turned the burly Will Evans inside out and clipped a delightful right foot shot into the rigging.

Mullin hit the side-netting with his best effort at a hat trick before being taken off in the 90th minute by manager Phil Parkinson so he could have his richly deserved personal standing ovation.

How different it was at the final curtain from the game’s astonishing opening. The notion that Wrexham’s promotion party would follow a predictable script was squashed in the opening 45 seconds.

The raucous home crowd was reduced to a stunned silence as Lee Ndlovu was put through the middle and, with former England goalkeeper Ben Foster powerless to do anything about it, the striker calmly lobbed into the empty net.

Wrexham, however, responded well to the setback, quickly gaining possession and putting Wood back on the back foot. Chris Bush snuffed out an effort from Sam Dalby and the visitors were defending in a composed fashion until being hit with a slick 15th minute equaliser.

Ryan Barnett was the goal’s creator, finding space on the right for a precise clipped cross and, with several Wrexham players in the box, it was

Elliot Lee who stooped to conquer with a neat header at the far post.

The midfielder had raised the Racecourse roof with the winner in the critical clash with Notts County and his intervention settled the Welsh side’s nerves on another emotional night.

Wood were then briefly under intense pressure before emerging from their enforced shell to make a good contribution to an even and exciting first half.

Mullin forced Ashmore to save at his near post whilst an Agbontohoma cross saw Femi Ilesanmi plunge to head narrowly wide for Wood.

Their bid for a play-off spot will go to the final day but this day was all about Wrexham.
