‘CLUBS CAN DO MORE FOR ACCESS’ - P3
LEADER Josh Staunton has apologised to the heartbroken Yeovil Town fans, on behalf of the players, following the club’s relegation this week.
A 3-0 defeat at Wrexham on Tuesday night ensured that the Glovers will be playing in National League South next season – just nine years after they were competing in the Championship.
Last month, it was announced that the SU Glovers group, headed by businessman Matt Uggla, had “taken on the stewardship” of the club, but details of that takeover have yet to be finalised, leaving manager Mark Cooper and his playing squad in limbo.
Staunton described the running of the club as an “anarchy” after the Wrexham defeat, insisting it needed “a structure, a plan, transparency and professionalism” from the boardroom if the club was to bounce back into the top tier next season.
And the skipper reour leased a statement on behalf of his fellow Glovers this week, apologising for the team’s failings and explaining the players’ situation.
Difficulty
It read: “We are extremely disappointed with how the season has gone in every aspect.
“As a group of players and staff we share the hurt and anguish of supporters who have had to endure another hard season for the club, for which we apologise. There have been periods of great difficulty, both on and off the pitch, but the support from the fans has never once wavered.
Resolution
“In a time of huge uncertainty, which is beyond our control, where as a group of players and staff we have found it increasingly difficult to fulfil our duties for you, I still believe it is paramount to pass on our apologies to the fans for performances across the season.”
Director Stuart Robins also apologised to the fans in his programme notes for the game against Oldham yesterday, but could offer no definitive resolution.
“As soon as I am able to, I will provide a detailed update on club matters,” he wrote. “I appreciate you have all been extremely patient over the past few years, and once again, I thank you for that.”
