MUNDAY IS AIMING FOR ROFF JUSTICE

- By Matthew Nash

JACK MUNDAY believes Roffey will be clear favourites for promotion back to the top flight of the Southern Combination League after the club just fell short in their last-ditch battle to stay up.

The Boars finished bottom of the Premier Division, having had to wait until March for their first victory of the season, after five wins in their last nine games gave them a chance of completing an amazing bid for survival.

Now they will rebuild at Step 6 under former Alfold boss Munday, who won Division One with his former club in 2019, and he insists the future is bright at Bartholomew Way, even if they will be burdened with expectation.

“We’re keeping the same squad that finished the season so well and we want to go for everything, not just promotion. We want to go for the lot,” Munday told The NLP.

“We’ll be tagged as favourites to go back up because of the squad we’ve got – most of them have won the division before with Roffey or Alfold – and we know that.

Munday rued the fact his team’s late rally in their battle to stay up came just too late in the end, despite taking some impressive scalps at the end of the campaign.

He added: “Ninety per cent of my squad came in during December and January and even then we didn’t have them all available.

“Our form and team gelled probably two weeks too late but the teams we faced in the last seven or eight matches couldn’t believe we were in the position we were in.

“We were one of only three teams to go to Bexhill and win in the last three years and we proved we can compete with the best teams in the Premier Division so we will be expected to do well in Division One.”

And Munday is helped by former Crawley Town caretaker-boss and ex-Plymouth Argyle assistant manager Craig Brewster, who is youth development co-ordinator down the road at Pitching In Premier Division neighbours Horsham.

Munday revealed his own remit goes beyond just ensuring stability for the first team following a rollercoaster season.

“We’re building the club from top to bottom and since I came in I’ve been involved with everything from the design of the new club badge to the new kit deal with Macron and bringing in sponsorship,” he said.

“My main focus is building a youth system from six-year-olds upwards and in the next five years we aim to have an academy as well.

“There’s going to be a new website and everyone is staying because they can see the potential the club has. We’re bringing in an Under-17 side from Faygate and they will be the future for us.

“Craig has upped our levels in terms of coaching and we knew even if we went down, these players were here to stay.”
