The Non-League Football Paper

No-one will ever take the place of legend Jeff

“THERE’S only one Jeff Stelling”

As the legendary Soccer Saturday host waves a fond farewell to Sky Sports after three decades at the helm, I wanted to thank him for his ‘unbelievable’ support of Prostate Cancer UK.

A staple on Saturday afternoons for more than 25 years, delivering all the football drama as it unfolds, viewers would have seen Jeff proudly sporting Prostate Cancer UK’s ‘Man of Men’ badge in the last eight seasons.

He’s a long-time ambassador for Prostate Cancer UK who has raised an incredible £1.5m during a series of epic fundraising walks to football clubs up and down the UK. For those counting he’s walked 33 marathons – with one more to come in September.

Of equal importance is how he’s also stirred up immeasurable awareness of prostate cancer, the most common cancer in men, on the streets and in the studio.

Since 2015-16, Jeff has been proudly sporting his ‘Man of Men’ badge on his lapel. That’s more than 250 times.

I’m so glad he did as it helped save my husband’s life…

We were watching Soccer Saturday one afternoon and noticed the new badge that he was wearing. We’d not seen it before so googled it and found out it represented Prostate Cancer UK. Digging deeper we realised some of the symptoms were present in Danny. He was later diagnosed with an aggressive version of the disease. Eight years on he’s still with us and its inspired us to raise more than £450,000.

I want to tell Jeff a million things. He’s changing what people think and know about prostate cancer. If you think about the percentage of men staring at Jeff and his panel every Saturday, and sometimes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, looking at the badge and asking what it stands for and researching it. He’s saving lives. And he’s changed our lives.”

I can’t say thanks enough to Jeff, to his plethora of punditry pals from Phil Thompson to Charlie Nicholas and Paul Merson to Michael Dawson, and many, many others. Plus everyone across Sky Sports, for their work in spreading this hugely important message. And for changing my life.

Someone will take your chair, Jeff, but nobody will take your place.

Thanks Jeff. You really aware unbelievable. TRACY FLETCHER
