SEADOGS’ RUN OVER (AGAIN)!

- By Freddie George

SCARBOROUGH Athletic’s FA Cup adventure finally came to an end against Forest Green Rovers at the third time of asking – but only after they were back in dreamland for five minutes.

The National League North Seadogs thought they had exited the competition last month after losing their first round replay with the League Two side 5-2.

But Rovers were found to have played a loan player without notifying The FA of the appropriate permission and the governing body ruled the tie should be played again.

And, just as they did in the first game, Jonathan Greening’s side took the lead when Ryan

Qualter headed across goal and defender Jamie Robson couldn’t keep the ball out of his own net.

But Forest Green were level within five minutes when Tyrese Omotoye tapped in.

Callum Morton gobbled up a loose ball in the box to fire Rovers ahead ten minutes after the break before Sean Robertson extended the lead on 83 minutes by slotting home low.

Luca Colville pulled one back for Scarborough with a calm finish when he collected the ball in acres of space inside the box but Matt Stevens ended any hopes of a comeback on 89 minutes to put his side through to the second round where they face League One Blackpool – Nottingham Forest will be the winners’ third round opponents.

Alfreton Town’s hopes of reaching the third round proper – where Championship side Southampton were waiting – came to an end in their second round replay.

Following a 0-0 draw at their Impact Arena home, Billy Heath’s Reds fell to narrow defeat at Walsall.

Former Kidderminster Harriers strike Jamille Matt scored the only goal of the game, sliding in to finish from six yards with just six minutes gone.

Manager Heath said: “The early goal really knocked the stuffing out of us. And even that was a bit lucky. It was just a deflection that fell kindly for them. But, in the second half, I actually thought we were the better team.”

National League Barnet were swept aside 4-1 by Newport County in their replay.

The League Two side were three goals to the good inside 25 minutes. Strikes from Lewis Payne, Omar Bogle and Danny Collinge’s unfortunate own goal put the Exiles in cruise control.

Bees skipper Harry Pritchard pulled one back with a header from close range before halftime.

Barnet’s Idris Kanu crashed a curling shot off the crossbar in the second half as Dean Brennan’s side went in search of a second. But Seb Palmer-Houlden added a fourth on 76 minutes to set-up a third round date with National League Eastleigh.
