BOSS MOR HEADS FOR NEW ROLE AT SUTTON

- By Steve McEnnerney Tom Wraight (Hornchurch) ★★★★★

STEVE MORISON resigned as Hornchurch manager last night following this draw with Horsham to become boss of League Two Sutton United.

Former Millwall striker Morison, whose last Football League job ended with him leaving Championship Cardiff in September 2022, announced his departure to Urchins fans in the clubhouse following his last match in charge of the club.

The 40-year-old ex-Welsh international replaces Matt Gray, who was sacked on December 19.

Hornchurch chairman Alex Sharp said: “I’m disappointed to confirm that Steve will be leaving us after six months, following probably the most impressive first half of a season we have ever seen.

“Steve has brought a level of professionalism to the club that has lifted us from the disappointment of last season’s play-off final defeat and while I am sad to see Steve leave from the club’s perspective, I am delighted he has got an exciting opportunity to return to the Football League so quickly and feel proud that Hornchurch has provided the platform for that return.

“Steve has been fantastic for the club and the foundation he has put in place sees us top of the league with games in hand and a fantastic goal difference and we will do our best now to close out the season as we have started off. I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to Steve and to Ant Fenton, who will take up the role of Steve’s assistant from Monday.

“We will take our time now making sure we get the right replacement for Steve.”

The Urchins lead the table by seven points with two games in hand on second-placed Chatham, despite dropping two points at home to Horsham.

The hosts led on the half hour. Ade Yusuff was fouled on the edge of the box and Liam Nash curled the resulting free-kick over the wall and into the top corner.

The Hornets began the second half sharply and were rewarded four minutes after the restart. Harvey Sparks unleashed an effort from 30 yards into the top corner of Dion-Curtis Henry’s goal.

Jack Brivio saw red for Horsham following two bookings.
