TOP GUN MOORE AXED BY WHITES
FAVERSHAM Town have sacked manager Sammy Moore – despite the club sitting pretty on top of the Southern Counties East Premier Division.
Former Brentford, Leyton Orient and AFC Wimbledon midfielder Moore’s departure came after last Saturday’s 4-2 home defeat by fellow title challengers Deal Town, following 2-2 draws against promotion rivals Glebe and Whitstable Town.
Moore, 36, who had previously managed Leatherhead, Hemel Hempstead Town and Concord Rangers, took Potters Bar Town to the top of the Isthmian Premier before surprisingly leaving to join ambitious Faversham in November 2022, with his new club at the bottom of the Isthmian South East Division.
But despite making a string of high-profile signings, including former Wycombe and AFC Wimbledon striker Adebayo Akinfenwa, Moore failed to steer the Lilywhites to safety.
Chairman Gary Smart said: “Personally and from the board of directors we would like to thank Sammy and his amazing family for all the hard work and effort that has been put into the club over the last 14 months.
“As a board and with the resources at the disposal for the management team along with the quality of players that have been signed this season, we feel that the combination of recent results together with the clear objectives of the football club that were set out at the start of the season have not been achieved.”
Utility player Matthew Newman has been appointed caretaker manager while Faverham choose a permanent replacement, with the deadline for applications having closed on Friday.
Smart added: “The club will make an announcement on the new appointment within the very near future. Our focus for Faversham Town remains the same from now until the end of the season to gain promotion and to build a team that can challenge in this league and the league above.
