Quickfire treble earns revenge for Cook’s men

- By Joe Hyde

THREE goals in the space of just five second-half minutes saw leaders Chesterfield turn the tables on Solihull Moors and extend their lead at the top of the National League table to seven points.

Moors recorded a shock 2-0 win in the first game between the sides on Boxing Day and led by the same scoreline in the return match at the Technique Stadium, thanks to goals from Matty Warburton and Mark Beck.

But after Tom Naylor hammered home to halve the deficit and Ryan Colclough levelled things up, Will Grigg then capped off a sensational comeback.

“Regardless of mistakes and things that happened during the game, they really are showing such character,” Chesterfield assistant manager Danny Webb said.

“Going behind in front of nearly 9,000 home supporters so the players have a lot of credit for that comeback.

“You’re looking at the boys [at 2-0] going, ‘What’ve you got?’ We got the goal and then you just fancied us.

“To see the game out with the maturity and professionalism that we did makes the New Year’s Day drinks a bit tastier so fair play to them for sticking together.”

Meanwhile, Gateshead missed out on the chance to leapfrog Moors in the playoff places as they fell to a shock 2-0 defeat at much-improved York City – Will Davies and Dipo Akinyemi the scorers for the Minstermen, who are beginning to climb the table.

Aldershot Town boosted their play-off chances with a 3-2 away derby success at local rivals Woking, in front a crowd of over 5,000 at Kingfield.

Lorent Tolaj put the Shots ahead, only for Rhys Browne to equalise three minutes later.

Tyler Frost and Jack Barham then put Tommy Widdrington’s men back in the driving seat but after teen ace Josh Stokes was controversially handed a second yellow card late on for diving, Reeco-Grego-Cox pulled a goal back to set up a grandstand finish but the Shots held on.

An early Josh Stones strike and a Mike Fondop-Talum effort helped

Oldham Athletic pile on the misery for managerless

Hartlepool United, who are now winless in their last six.

Matty Kosylo was sent off for Altrincham against his old club FC Halifax Town in a 0-0 draw at The Shay, while Danny Ormerod scored twice as AFC Fylde climbed off the bottom of the table with a 2-0 win over

Rochdale at Mill Farm.

In the game of the day, the National League’s top scorer Paul McCallum was at it again, scoring a hattrick in Eastleigh’s visit of

Dagenham & Redbridge.

But it still wasn’t enough to ensure victory as the Daggers hit back to in a pulsating 4-4 draw. Josh Rees scored twice for Ben Strevens’ men, while Inih Effiong netted the all-important leveller ten minutes from time.

Dorking Wanderers helped themselves to a much-needed victory with a 2-1 success at fellow strugglers Oxford City.

Second-half strikes from Niall McManus and Seb Bowerman helped move the Wands four points ahead of their opponents in the drop zone.
