JONNY GOOD FOR LINNETS!

- By Matthew Luddington

KING’S LYNN Town boss Adam Lakeland reckons he’s getting free-scoring Jonny Margetts at the peak of his powers.

The 30-year-old former Tranmere Rovers and Lincoln City striker has completed a switch to the Linnets from Matlock Town after having scored an incredible 136 goals in 139 games over the last four seasons.

Naturally, Lakeland believes he has landed something of a coup as he looks to preserve the Linnets’ National League North status.

“I’m delighted to bring Jonny to the club,” the former Farsley Celtic and CurScunthorpe. zon Ashton chief said. “He is a proven goal scorer having scored goals throughout his career at a number of clubs, particularly in recent years where his goals-togames ratio is unrivalled.

“He is a natural finisher, goal-seeker and has excellent movement in and around the final third.

“As well as goals, Jonny brings a wealth of experience which is something you are always looking to add, and having recently turned 30, I believe he has a few good years left in him and that we are getting him at the peak of his career.”

Margetts is the headline act of a major re-shuffle at The Walk as Lakleland looks to turn around the club’s fortunes this season.

Several new faces have been brought in including former Cambridge United defender Greg Taylor, rightback Dylan Crowe from Torquay, and midfielder Quevin Castro, on loan from York City. Forward Harley Curtis has also arrived on a onemonth loan from Chesterfield, joining Owen Devonport from Fleetwood Town.

Margetts came through Hull City’s youth system and graced the ranks of a number of clubs including Tranmere, Lincoln and But it was in Non-League where he really blossomed, starting at Frickley Athletic in 2019 where he averaged almost a goal a game for the Blues at Step 4.

That record was then bettered at Belper Town where Margetts scored 25 goals in just 18 games for the Nailers before joining Stamford where he broke all records, smashing 57 goals in 64 appearances for the Daniels as they cruised to the NPL Midlands Division title.

Margetts tweeted: “Absolutely delighted to join King’s Lynn Town. Can’t wait to get started and hopefully plenty of goals to come.”
