HOT PIC DANNY WILL BE HIT FOR UNITED

- By Freddie George

SOUTHEND UNITED have landed a genuine hot-shot in Danny Waldron, according to Rushall Olympic boss Liam McDonald.

The 27-year-old striker has joined the National League Shrimpers on an 18-month deal for an undisclosed fee.

Waldron, joint top scorer in the National League North, has hit 16 goals for the Pics this season having joined in the summer from Alvechurch, where he was a key part of last season’s FA Cup run to the second round including two goals against Cheltenham Town.

“I’m looking forward to it, exciting times,” Waldron told the club’s website.

“There were all sorts of rumours going around but I didn’t know anything about it.

“My agent messaged me on Boxing Day and we’ve had ongoing talks since then. I’m just glad it’s all sorted now.

“[Full-time football] is something I’ve never done before but I think it will help me improve as a player. I’m looking forward to seeing how good I can get.”

Former Redditch and Solihull Moors boss McDonald says Waldron is one of the best he’s managed.

“This is a great move for Danny,” he said. “He has worked extremely hard this season and has improved so much as a footballer. His finishing has been deadly and has scored a crazy amount of goals for a club in our position. It’s massive credit to him and his teammates for getting him this opportunity. He is a very talented footballer, one of the best that I have managed.

“He’s a likeable lad who we care about immensely. Yes, we are sad to see him go, but we are excited for him on the next part of his journey. Southend have a top striker on their hands.

“He’s going to be missed; he will be hard to replace.”
