HISTORY IS ON CRAIG’S LIST AS TNS PLOUGH ON

- By Rob Cole

SERIAL winner Craig Harrison saw his New Saints team reveal their ruthless side as they picked up the first of what they hope could be four trophies this season by beating Swansea City Under-21s 5-1 in the Nathaniel MG Cup final at Jenner Park.

The young Swans were forced to play into the strong wind in the first half, on a plastic pitch for the first time this season, and initially struggled to keep up with Wales’ No.1 domestic side.

To their credit, they never stopped running, never gave up and conjured up a goal of their own in the second half to at least leave Barry with something.

But as soon as the outstanding Ryan Brobbel had given the current unbeaten JD Cymru Premier leaders the lead after only six minutes, it was virtually all over bar the trophy lift.

This was the 24th straight win in Welsh football for TNS this term, 26th if you add in two wins in the SFPL Trust Trophy. Under Harrison in his first spell as boss, TNS entered the Guinness Book of Records for winning 27 games in a row, eclipsing a 40year record held by Ajax.

Harrison will no doubt have that landmark in mind as he gears his side up for their next two cup ties: a SFPL Trust semi against Falkirk on February 3 and a JD Welsh Cup quarter-final against at Briton Ferry Llansawel on February 16.

This was the fifth time Harrison had manged a winning team in the old Welsh League Cup final, the fourth with TNS. It was also his 16th trophy with the club.

That Brobbel goal, his 14th of the season, came after Rory Holden had seen his shot on the run parried away by young Swans keeper Remy Mitchell and Brobbel gratefully picked up the pieces to opening the scoring.

Holden then hit the post with a fierce shot from the edge of the area and it took a miraculous piece of defending from Swansea’s impressive and imposing centre-back Richard Faayhe to deny Jordan Williams.

Mitchell was required to tip a Brad Young header wide and it was no surprise when Josh Pask hit the second TNS goal in on 19 minutes, sticking out a leg to steer in a Brobbel overhead kick.

It was 2-0 at the break and then 3-0 five minutes after the restart when Young guided a Brobbel cross from the left past Mitchell.

Ben Lloyd made Pask pay for some sloppy TNS defending when he snapped up a loose ball six yards out to make it 3-1 just short of the hour mark but that was as good as it got for the youthful Swans.

Adrian Cieslewicz, a 73rd-minute sub, put the seal on another good night’s work from TNS by scoring twice in added time.
