IT’S DELIGHT FOR WHITE AS WANDS WOW WOOD

DELIGHTED Dorking Wanderers boss Marc White lavished praise on his side as they inflicted a first home defeat on fellow strugglers Boreham Wood since early October.

Quickfire goals in the first half from Jason Prior and Alfie Rutherford put the Wands in control before Wood saw striker Tyrone Marsh sent off for a second bookable offence on the stroke of half-time.

Man-of-the-match Charlie Carter completed the rout for the Surrey side to move them level on points with Wood, four clear of safety.

White told The NLP: “To come to somewhere like Boreham Wood and put in a performance like that is very encouraging.

“We had a few players who were at the top of their game.

“The first goal really lifted the team and we went on from there.”

Wood, buoyed by their comeback 4-4 draw with Eastleigh on Wednesday, started the stronger with their two-goal hero, Erico Sousa, seeing a shot from distance well saved by Harrison Male in the Dorking goal.

White was forced into a change as early as the 12th minute with Seb Bowerman forced to go off – and it was his replacement Bobby Joe-Taylor who orchestrated their first chance with an excellent cross which forced Wood keeper Nathan Ashmore into a crucial block.

Five minutes later, an excellent run from Carter, just failed to hit the target as Dorking threatened.

Indeed, it was no surprise when the Wands took the lead on 32 minutes – Prior getting on the end of George Francomb’s corner and finishing with a bullet header for his ninth goal in the National League this season.

Another Francomb corner was fired over by Hayden Hollis but moments later it was 2-0 – Rutherford taking advantage of a mistake in the Wood defence to finish into an empty net.

Wanderers now had their tails up and Prior went close again two minutes later but couldn’t keep his shot down.

Things got worse for Wood when striker Marsh was sent off for a second booking due to a deliberate handball ball goal following an Sousa corner.

Wood’s ten men came out for the second half showing some spirit – Cameron Coxe just failing to get on the end of a dangerous Sousa pass

– but Dorking remained in total control. On the hour, Dorking midfielder Dan Pybus forced a good save from Ashmore, but the visitors weren’t to be denied a minute later when Carter got on the end of a Prior flick on to make it 3-0.

Wood were well beaten but they did have a good chance to pull a goal back on 77 minutes, but Chris Bush headed straight at goalkeeper Male.

Any further attacks were well stifled by the Dorking defence, well marshalled by captain Tony Craig, and White’s men could celebrate an important win on the road.
