IRONS IN THE FIRE AS PEAKS EYES WIN

- STAR MAN: Luke Fairlamb (Tamworth) ENTERTAINMENT: ★★★★★

TAMWORTH stayed nine points clear at the top of the table as they look to close in on a return to the National League.

Goals from Dan Creaney and Ben Acquaye ensured the Lambs got back to winning ways following Tuesday’s goalless draw at home to Boston United.

Home boss Andy Peaks was delighted with the performance ahead of Tuesday’s trip to second-placed Scunthorpe. “It was important we gained three points after the draw against Boston on Tuesday, especially as we go into the top-of-thetable clash at Scunthorpe,” he said.

“All the players put in a good shift and perhaps we could have grabbed another couple of goals if we had been more clinical in the final third. I was pleased that Dan Creaney got back on the scoresheet but equally pleased with the quality of the defence, who looked very strong.”

The visitors hardly troubled a Tamworth defence who were looking to extend their run of clean sheets to five successive matches.

Town came into the game looking for important points in order to move up the table under new manager Graeme Lee but it was the Lambs that had the best of the first half chances.

Creaney was at the heart of the opportunities and he brought a great save out of visiting keeper James Montgomery when Matt Curley sent in a teasing cross that had to be tipped over the bar.

Montgomery was helpless though in the 40th minute when Creaney headed home a corner from captain Ben Milnes.

Spennymoor broke quickly at the start of the second half but David Moyo saw his shot go wide. There were more chances for the home side with shots on target from Tom Tonks and Nathan Tshikuna, the latter bringing another good save from Montgomery diving low to his right. However, Tamworth wrapped the game up in the 70th minute.

Milnes released Acquaye just over the halfway line and he raced clear of the defence to plant the ball past the advancing keeper.

The visitors came close to reducing the deficit in the final minutes when substitute Will Harris found himself open at the back post but blasted his shot wide of the target.

Keeper Jas Singh in the home goal was rarely troubled and the Lambs look in good form as they travel to face the Iron at Glanford Park on Tuesday evening.
