SUPER SILKMEN GET BACK ON TRACK

- WELSH ROUND-UP By Rob Cole

FLINT TOWN United got back to winning ways after losing their 17-match unbeaten run at Airbus UK Broughton as they cut the gap at the top of the JD Cymru North table to a single point with a 3-1 win at Guilsfield.

The Silkmen were two goals to the good at the break thanks to a brace from Elliott Reeves and Josh Jones made it 3-0 in the 71st minute. Both sides were then reduced to ten men with Jolyon Harries seeing red for the home side and James Owen departing for the visitors with six minutes left to play.

Iwan Matthews grabbed a consolation goal for the home side, but the win for Flint more than made amends for their defeat even days earlier. Third placed Holywell Town also came up with the goods as they were 4-1 home winners over Gresford Athletic.

The visitors were reduced to ten men after only 25 minutes when Adam Hesp received his marching orders, although Dan Sullivan missed with the resulting penalty. Gresford then hit the front through Toby Gallagher-Keenan four minutes from the break. Stirred into action, the Wellmen drew level on the stroke of half-time thanks to a Michael Pearson goal. In the second half Jamie Breese put Holywell ahead from the spot and Jake Cooke and Sam Jones wrapped it up.

Holywell are now one point behind Flint in third with a game in hand and two points behind league leaders Airbus UK with three games in hand. They finished as runners-up to Colwyn Bay last season.

Bangor 1876 were 1-0 winners at Chirk AAA, where Corrig McGonigle’s goal in the 42nd minute proved decisive. Llanidloes Town also won 1-0 on the road at Porthmadog.

In the JD Cymru South, Carmarthen Town moved up to second thanks to a 1-0 home win over Abertillery Bluebirds. Liam Thomas’ 69th minute goal proved the difference between the two sides and pushed his side one point clear of Llanelli Town in second place.

League leaders Briton Ferry Llansawel are now six points clear with two games in hand on the Old Gold, while Llanelli in third have three games in hand on Carmarthen and one on the leaders. Neither played over the weekend.

Tom McClean was a hat-trick hero for Caerau Ely as they went to Pontardawe Town and ran out 6-3 winners. It was a victory that moved them up to ninth.

Josh Dorwood gave Pontardawe an early lead, but goals from Brandon Griffiths and two from Liver Redhead made it 3-1 to the visitors at the break. The second half then belonged to the hat-trick hero.
