ROLLINS THE DECIDER VICTORY IN WELCOME VICTORY

- By Devon Cash

JAY Rollins’ early header was enough as Worksop Town put last weekend’s disappointment behind them to register a narrow win over Ashton United.

In a well-contested game devoid of much goalmouth action, the Tigers showed resilience after losing late against second-placed Marine last weekend to stay fifth as their play-off chasing rivals maintain pressure elsewhere in the division.

Worksop boss Craig Parry was pleased with his side’s response after last weekend’s exertions.

He told The NLP: “It was a scrappy game, but we did enough to win it. Last week we put everything on the line, and didn’t deserve to come away with a loss in the circumstances that we did.

“It’s been a hard week trying to lift the players, but we saw them pick themselves up and that togetherness got us through this game. We put our bodies on the line, did the right things, and it was a good performance to get three points.”

Worksop were quick out of the traps and took an early lead through Rollins, who looped Sam Wedgbury’s cross over the dive of goalkeeper Paul Cooper.

Rollins was denied a well-taken

brace on 11 minutes when the linesman raised his flag after the winger poked home from Luke Hall’s low cross.

Ashton too had the ball in the back of the net before it was subsequently chalked off, seven minutes before half-time.

Bernardo Couto forced Sebastian Malkowski into a save from distance, the goalkeeper parried said strike into Alex Byrne’s path, applying a sidefooted finish, though the flag was again raised as he wheeled away to celebrate.

In the second-half, there was even less action though the Robins hit the woodwork on 7 minutes.

Jake Charles’ long-range shot deflected wide and Dan Cowan hit the post from the resulting corner, dipping over Malkowski’s miscalculated leap before the stopper atoned for his lapse in judgment to deny Charles’ curling strike moments later.

Nathan Lowe’s straight red card in stoppage-time saw tension ease slightly for the hosts, as the Tigers emerged back to winning ways.
