STONES STARLET SAM TAKES THE PLAUDITS AGAIN
CUP HERO Sam Corne has added another accolade to his impressive scalp this season – the National League South player of the month award for January.
The 27-year-old midfielder scored the winning goal in both of Maidstone United’s FA Cup giant-killings against Stevenage and Ipswich Town.
In the league, Corne also netted against Tonbridge Angels and added assists against Dartford and Havant & Waterlooville to complete a productive month as the Stones continue to fight on two fronts.
While Maidstone stole the headlines for their cup exploits, Chelmsford City marched on in the midst as they won four from five in January to boost their promotion credentials.
As a result, Clarets boss Robbie Simpson was rewarded with the manager of the month award after impressive victories against Braintree, Worthing, Welling United and Hampton & Richmond.
National League leaders Chesterfield enjoyed a perfect January as five wins from five continued their relentless march to the title.
Spireites boss Paul Cook was awarded the manager of the month award – but this almost certainly won’t be the only trophy he gets his hands on in 2024, with the Spireites pulling 22 points clear at the top.
Cook’s men rallied to victories over Solihull Moors, Gateshead, Altrincham, Woking and Southend and came agonisingly close to pulling off a giant-killing in the FA Cup against Watford.
Lorent Tolaj was subject to a lot of speculation on his future on transfer deadline day, but thankfully for boss Tommy Widdrington, he opted to stay with Aldershot.
And the Swiss striker enjoyed a stellar January, bagging goals against rivals Woking, Bromley, Rochdale and Wealdstone to keep the Shots in the play-off mix.
Tamworth’s incredible season in the National League North reached new heights in January after securing five wins and a draw, without conceding a single goal.
Andy Peaks’ side moved 12 points clear after ending January with a victory at title rivals Scunthorpe.
Peaks collects the manager of the month trophy and will now have his eyes set on finishing the job and securing the title.
Alfreton Town sharp-shooter Liam Waldock picked up the player of the month award after scoring five goals and contributing two assists, underlining his value to the Reds.
