CITY ON CHARGE WITH A PAIR OF SCOTS

- By Jon Couch

AMBITIOUS Step 7 club Doncaster City have stepped up their promotion bid – by bringing two former Scotland internationals out of retirement.

The Central Midlands League Premier North Division side have landed former Aberdeen, Celtic and Dundee United star Charlie Mulgrew as well as ex-Fulham and Leeds United cult hero Ross McCormack in a sensational double swoop.

And to cap an ultra productive week, the Sky Blues also made two more high-profile addition in former Airdrie United, Ayr United and Livingston midfielder Scott McLaughlin, 40, and ex-Norwich City and Republic of Ireland international Wes Hoolahan, 41.

Centre-back Mulgrew, who won 44 caps for Scotland and became a favourite at Blackburn Rovers, turns 38 next month but has decided on a shock return to football after announcing he was to hang up his boots with an touching message last September.

And he will be joined at City by his former Scotland teammate McCormack, who was last on the books at Liversedge following a short spell at Aldershot Town.

The 37-year-old established himself as one of the best strikers in the Championship at Cardiff City, before joining Leeds United and then Fulham.

A £12m transfer to Aston Villa in 2017 didn’t quite work out for the striker, though, and he left Villa Park two years later after a series of loan spells.

Founded just two years ago, Doncaster City FC already have a Scottish connection through their owner, top international football agent Willie McKay.

Ground-sharing with Northern Counties East League side Armthorpe Welfare they are managed by Dave Twigg and currently sit second in the Central Midlands League table with 15 wins from 17 matches.
