SIGHTS SET ON WEMBLEY

WORCESTER CITY

- MATT LUDDINGTON

WORCESTER City manager Chris Cornes says that there is a buzz around the club because of their historic run to the Isuzu FA Vase quarter-final.

City face Emley at Claines Lane on Saturday with tickets sold out within 15 minutes of going on sale.

The club has now progressed further than in any FA competition in their history and their fans are dreaming of Wembley.

“Seeing those fans through the door is just brilliant for the club,” Cornes said. “Attendances have gone through the roof and there’s a buzz around the club at the moment.

“We stared in the preliminary rounds in August beating AFC Bridgnorth 8-1 and have now won seven games to get to this stage. It’s been fantastic – it brings money into the club,

“We’ve had some big travelling fans –it was a sell-out at Stourport – and it’s given that bit back for the fans. Now they’ve got the dangling carrot of the semi-final and final.

“Not only did the Emley game sell out after about 10 or 15 minutes, the game against Worcester Raiders on Tuesday night is also a sell out Claines Lane.”

City sit top of the Hellenic League and Cornes insists the priority remains securing promotion to Step 4.

“For me, it’s always been about the league, but a day out at Wembley is massive – you can’t take away the magnitude of it.

“We’ve not overly spoken about Wembley as a group as we’ve got some importnat league games coming up first, but the Vase and prospect of Wembley is in the back of our mind, what a day it would be.

“We’ll take every game as it comes. We’re top of the league at the minute, in the quarter-final of the Vase, the semi-finals of one league cup, and the final of another. It’s about managing the expectation and the added pressure tat goes with it.

“We’ve done well and hopefully with a bit of luck we can carry the run on.”
