GENERALS IN CONTROL AS STAGS RUN FINALLY ENDS

-

AFTER their unbeaten run of 14 games ended last week, Chesham bounced back by ending Totton’s own record of 11 league games without defeat.

Goals at the beginning of each half by Jordan Edwards and Lewis Rolfe clinched the result and extended the Generals’ lead at the top of the table to 14 points.

Chesham made a dream start with a goal in the third minute.

Bradley Clayton combined with Alex Lafleur on the left, and pulled the ball back to Edwards who worked himself a shooting chance before slotting home.

Totton’s experienced forward line stretched the home defence but Chesham stood firm with veteran defender Kieran Murphy in fine form.

Chesham nearly added a second but Edwards’ free-kick was just too far ahead of Ryan Upward.

James Harding was making his debut for Chesham after signing from Salisbury in the week, and after 26 minutes he broke clear only to be hauled back by Sam Magri who was booked. Edwards took the resulting free-kick which deflected off the wall and clipped the outside of a post.

Four minutes into the second half Chesham doubled their lead.

Following a throw on the right Clayton crossed and Rolfe forced the ball home after his initial effort was blocked.

On the hour mark Harding broke clear and attempted to round keeper Joshua Gould who brought the player down to earn a yellow card. Frustration began to creep into the game, Totton earning seven yellow cards in all including two for their manager Jimmy Ball and his assistant for dissent.

The visitors only came close once, and that was deep in stoppage time when a shot from sub Matthew Burrows clipped the bar.

Chesham joint manager Michael Murray was delighted with his team’s efforts.

“It was a great result and a positive performance and we bounced back well from last week,” he said. “I felt that we were in full control although they had plenty of possession.”
