THE NEW SAINTS CHASE A RECORD

- By Carl Field

WELSH ROUND-UP

THE NEW SAINTS march on in the JD Cymru Premier after winning 1-0 at Newtown, chasing the record for consecutive wins that they recently lost.

The decisive moment came after 33 minutes when the unfortunate Kieran Mills-Evans headed past his own goalkeeper Andy Wycherley.

But Newtown certainly had their moments: Jason Oswell headed straight at Connor Roberts from point blank range in the first half while Roberts needed to pull off a superb save to deny Ryan Sears on the hour.

The hosts finished the game with 10 men with Matthew Jones shown a straight red card for an off-the-ball incident.

Another win for TNS makes it 26 in a row in all competitions, in the same week Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal set a new world record for most consecutive wins (28) by a men’s top-flight team – surpassing TNS’s previous record of 27 set in 2016.

Connah’s Quay Nomads slipped to a third straight defeat as they went down 2-1 at Caernarfon Town.

The Nomads were presented with a glorious chance to take an early lead when Harry Franklin was fouled inside the box just 15 seconds in. However Jordan Davies saw his resultant penalty saved by Lewis Webb.

Two goals within 15 minutes after half time from Louis Lloyd and Marc Williams turned the match Caernarfon’s way.

Davies converted a second opportunity from the spot in added time to pull one back.

Bala Town, in third, are now six points behind Connah’s Quay with four to play after a 1-0 victory at Cardiff Met.

After a goalless first half, Bala hit the front seven minutes after the break when George Newell slotted home from close range.

That moment proved decisive, although Bala were indebted to keeper Kelland Absalom for a superb double save on 65 minutes to keep their noses in front.

In the Play-Off Conference,

Penybont thrashed bottom side

Colwyn Bay 5-0.

Lewys Ware, Chris Venables – from the penalty spot – Keyon Reffell, Kane Owen and 15-yearold sub Ioan Phillips grabbed the goals.

Haverfordwest County beat

Aberystwyth Town 2-0 to win for the first time since Boxing Day.

Pontypridd United remain unbeaten under new boss Gavin Allen and edged a point clear of the bottom two after a 1-1 draw at home against Barry Town United.

Owain Jones gave Pontypridd the perfect start when he fired home an opener after five minutes, but that was cancelled out by William Richards’s leveller.
