HINSH ON A HIGH AGAIN
YORK City stunned champions Chesterfield to come from behind and secure a crucial three points in their battle against relegation in front of a record-breaking crowd.
Joe Quigley’s early opener for the Spireites was cancelled out by an outstanding finish from Maz Kouhyar before Dipo Akinyemi secured York a vital victory through a brilliant solo effort.
It’s now three wins on the bounce for City boss Adam Hinshelwood – a run which has taken the Minstermen five points clear of the relegation places.
And in front of a record crowd of 7,571 at the LNER Community Stadium, it was a day the new York boss can look on fondly.
“I’ve loved every minute of the last few weeks, it’s been brilliant,” Hinshelwood said.
“We got a real look at what we can achieve at this club, we are very proud.
“The fans erupted, they got behind us and put that ball into the back of the net, that’s what you want. We want to experience that more often as a club, and it’s down to us to provide that on the pitch.
“We came up against an excellent team today and I’ve just said to the boys that we’re not in a position where we can give up at any minute.
“We need players to relish those atmospheres, and in the second-half we did that a lot better.”
It wasn’t a start that Hinshelwood or York would have wanted, however, as Quigley capped off a well-worked move from the visitors, sliding Tom Naylor’s cross home from fiveyards out.
Banks and Kouhyar saw strikes charged down before Rory Watson produced a captivating stop from James Berry.
Watson was again called into action to deny Quigley a second from close-range, after the striker found himself unmarked on his 100th Chesterfield appearance.
Akinyemi soon saw a strike bobble wide of the target, before Watson denied Armando Dobra from range.
The half-time whistle was delayed after a lengthy stoppage which saw York’s Thierry Latty-Fairweather leave the field on a stretcher.
Watson made one final important stop on Berry before half-time, with the champions ahead at the break. It took just nine minutes of the second half before City would draw level, with Kouhyar meeting Akinyemi’s pass before cutting onto his right foot and curling an unstoppable effort into the top corner.
And in an end-to-end contest, it was the Minstermen who took the three points. A fantastic run down the left saw Akinyemi cut inside of Jamie Grimes, before York’s leading scorer netted with a low strike into Ryan Boot’s bottom left corner.
Berry had one final chance, but failed to test Watson with a venomous strike that drifted narrowly wide.
