URCHINS SWEAT ON TITLE TRIUMPH

- By Stephen McEnnerney STAR MAN: ENT

WINGATE & Finchley spoilt the promotion party at Bridge Avenue, meaning Hornchurch must wait until Monday at the earliest now to confirm the title.

The Blues caught the hosts cold straight from kick-off, a through-ball found Elliot Long and he calmly finished past goalkeeper Joe Wright.

In the opening exchanges, it looked like Wingate were going to extend their advantage – Christian Frimpong’s effort was blocked by Ryan Scott into the path of Anointed Chukwu but his shot was deflected behind for a corner which was cleared.

In response, a Tom Wraight free-kick was cleared to Liam Nash whose volley cleared the bar. Jack Taylor then raced back and delivered a perfect recovery tackle to deny the dangerous Long, who was through on goal to double his tally.

Wingate then spurned a glorious opportunity to make it 2-0 – Long on the byline squared to Chukwu six yards out, he turned sharply and fired narrowly wide. Chukwu then initiated a quick break and connected once again with Long but Tommie Hoban was effective as the last line of defence.

Another Wraight free-kick picked out Scott but failed to test Blues keeper Ben Goode.

After the break, Wright was called into action when his lightning reflexes prevented Long’s deflected effort finding the corner. The Wingate striker was hungry for his second and was rewarded with just that, finishing neatly into the corner.

Hornchurch pushed for a quick response and inroad back into the game – Makise Evans fed Thomas Avgoustidis but he shot over. Long’s attempt from range flicked off Taylor and Wright saved well.

Ten minutes from time and the Urchins reduced the defecit – a free-kick fell at the feet of Ollie Muldoon who drilled past

Goode. T however, received strong ch
