Revenge is sweet for Oban Athletic as they dump ’Dale

Oban Athletic Carradale West of Scotland AFL

OBAN ATHLETIC sought revenge last Wednesday when they took on Carradale just one week after losing 6-5 to the Kintyre- side.

The Oban side successfully settled the score with their rivals as Athletic ran out comfortable 3-1 winners.

Both teams travelled for this game and met halfway in Lochgilphead.

Athletic took the lead after 10 minutes when Alan Buchanan picked up the ball 20 yards from goal, beat his man and curled his shot around the keeper.

However, the lead didn’t last long and the score was level five minutes later.

Daniel MacKinnon was caught in possession, allowing the Carradale striker in on goal and he slotted the ball past a helpless Graham Douglas.

The game then turned into a scrappy stop and start affair, with a lot of fouls, and tempers being lost. Neither side created any further clear- cut chances and the first half ended 1-1.

Just as they had done on Saturday against Crookston, Athletic started the second half strongly.

Shortly after the restart, Paul Carmichael got his name on the score sheet when he drove past the Carradale defence and calmly chipped the ball over the goalkeeper.

The Oban side then started to dominate the game, with their opposition reverting to playing long balls.

Paul Carmichael secured his second of the day when he volleyed the ball home to make it 3-1.

Paul, who then had a bittersweet ending to his evening, won his side a penalty, which he volunteered to take, but the Carradale keeper pulled off a great save to deny the Oban striker his hat-trick.

Athletic don’t have a fixture this weekend and are not back in action again until September 19, when they travel to take on Ayrshire side, Westkirk, in the first round of the West of Scotland Cup.
