Benchmark memorial for popular ex-captain
AN OBAN carpenter has built a memorial bench for the former captain of Glencruitten golf club who died last year, writes Steven Rae.
Michael Acey was asked to make the bench for James Forgrieve, known as Larry, who was a member of the club for 70 years, until he died in April last year.
Larry’s cousin, also called James Forgrieve, said: ‘It’s absolutely lovely, excellent.
I’m delighted with it, and it’s a beautiful piece of work which has done Larry proud.
‘It shows how appreciated he was here at the golf club, of which he was a member for 70 years, including as captain in 1967 and 1968.
‘Thanks to Michael for his great workmanship. It’s a fitting tribute to Larry, who was a legend in Oban, and especially at the golf club.’
The bench will be a centre piece of a memorial garden which is being constructed in Larry’s memory, and is due to be completed in the coming months.
Michael said: ‘James asked me to build it after the other members recommended me.
‘I’ve recently set up a workshop underneath Farmfoods, so was happy to help.’
