Grant helps to show model of Hesperus in a new light
OBAN’S War and Peace museum has purchased a modern case for a 119-year- old model boat with the help of a grant from the Northern Lighthouse Heritage Trust (NLHT).
It will display a replica of the ship ‘Hesperus’, which operated in Oban until 1939 when she was retired.
The old case that surrounded the model was ‘battered’ due to many moves over the years.
The museum contacted the Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB) to see if they could help and their heritage trust agreed to provide a grant of £700.
Mike Bullock, chief executive of the NLB and trustee of NLHT, said: ‘We put a lot of emphasis on the importance of the relationship between NLB and Oban. It’s our operational home and to have the museum tell NLB’s story is something we’re very keen to promote.’
Charles Struthers, chairman of the museum, said: ‘We welcome and thank Commo- dore Bullock. He has helped with the restoration of the Hesperus case, and has given us the confidence to continue to display the historic artefacts of the NLB who have been associated with Oban for so long.’
