Final push to save tennis courts

A CAMPAIGN to raise cash for championship tennis courts at Atlantis Leisure Centre, Oban, is hoping for one final push to secure the only facility on the west coast of Scotland.

Sports coach and tennis mum Judy Murray and team manager for the Davis Cup Leon Smith have both backed the campaign saying how important the Oban Tennis and Squash Club (OTSC) are for both coaching and developing players.

Nick Wesley, Atlantis Leisure manager, said he was hopeful that the campaign would show funders that the town was back- ing its plans to have the courts back up and running and in full working order again.

Mr Wesley said: ‘We have started a tennis ball wall where anyone who gives a donation has their name on the wall.

‘This has raised the profile of the campaign to everyone coming into the centre.

‘ We have still got a long way to go, but I am sure that we can get the support we need to secure the cash from sportscotland.’

Tennis doubles player and world number 58 in rankings Colin Fleming, who won the Oban tournament twice in 2005 and 2008, and went on to represent GB in the Davis Cup, added his support to the campaign, saying: ‘Best wishes to all involved in the effort to renew the courts in Oban.

‘I have played the tournament many times and it is a highlight of the Scottish tennis calendar.

‘Renewing the courts would take the tournament to the next level and help attract an even stronger field than usual.’

People can donate by going through the Atlan- tis Leisure website to the Mydonate page.
