Abigail named in women’s Six Nations squad

-

FORMER Oban High School pupil Abigail Evans has been named in Scotland’s 2017 Women’s Six Nations Championship squad.

Abigail made her Scotland debut for Scotland in the 2015 Six Nations opener against France.

She will feature alongside 31 other players, including her teammate and Scottish Rugby’s first full-time female player Jade Konkel.

Argyll and Bute rugby development officer, Allan Wright, said: ‘Having Abigail playing at the top level of rugby in the country is a huge achievement for her personally and also for Oban High School and Oban Lorne RFC’s Youth Rugby set-ups, where Abigail was introduced to the game.

‘Her involvement particularly in the Scottish National Women’s set-up should act as a big incentive to all girls playing rugby across the country and especially rural areas such as Argyll and Bute.

‘Currently we have girls playing in Oban, Mull, Campbeltown, Islay and Lochgilphead.

‘Hopefully some of the girls in these clubs can follow in Abigail’s footsteps in the future.’

Abigail started playing rugby while at Oban High School when she was 12 years old. She now plays for Hillhead Jordan in the Scottish National League.

Scotland Women will open their campaign against Ireland Women on Friday February 3.

They will play two further matches at Broadwood, which they adopted as their base last year, hosting Wales on Friday February 24 and Italy on Friday March 17.

They will face France on Saturday February 11 in La Rochelle (kick- off 8pm GMT) and England on Saturday March 11 at The Twickenham Stoop.

All 15 Women’s Six Nations games will be broadcast live on TV or online to help raise the profile of the championship.
